LineageOS 15.1 Upgrades Moto G 3 2015 to Android 8.1 Oreo (Installation Guide)


Moto G 2015 (third gen) owners can now experience Google’s latest mobile operating system Android 8.1 Oreo via LineageOS 15.1. The development team has released unofficial build of LineageOS 15.1 for Moto G 3 2015 and Moto G Turbo Edition. If you are interested to get LineageOS and Android Oreo on your Moto G 3, then check out the installation instruction given at the end of this post.

Compiled from the LineageOS source code by the XDA user althafvly, the LineageOs 15.1 ROM will bring Android 8.1 Oreo, new wallpapers, Pixel 2 Launcher, redesigned Power menu, new boot animation, round Status bar icons, new settings menu and more.


The below installation guide is common for Moto G 2015 (osprey) and Moto G Turbo Edition (Merlin). The ROM supports the following Moto G variants: XT1540, XT1541, XT1542, XT1543, XT1544, XT1548 and XT1550.

To install the custom ROM, your device’s bootloader should be unlocked and have installed latest version of TWRP recovery.

Note: Before proceeding with the below steps, back up all data from your device as the process will wipe all data you have on the phone.

Note: LineageOS 15.1 (unofficial) is a testing build, so you may experience glitches while using it. Do not recommend to install it on your prime device.

How to flash LineageOS 15.1 on Moto G 3

1. Download LineageOS 15.1 from here [development page]. Save the ROM zip file on your phone.

2. Download Android 8.1 compatible Gapps package from here and save the Gapps zip file on your phone.

3. Boot your phone in TWRP Recovery Mode by switching off your phone and holding power button + volume up button together

4. In TWRP recover, choose ‘Backup’ and make a Nandroid backup (recommended)

5. Now, wipe all your data by going to Select Wipe > Advance Wipe.

6. Now, select ‘Install’ and choose the LineageOS ROM package that needs to be installed from your internal storage. Once done, install Gapps, and then reboot your device.

After booting (it will take a little long time), setup the new OS, go to About Phone, and check for the system version. It should reflect LineageOS 15.1 and Android version 8.1 (source – XDA)
