How to Disable Apps’ Location Tracking in Android Oreo

In Android 8.0/8.1 Oreo, you can disable per app location tracking, if you’re concerned more about your privacy. It is easy to prevent any app from accessing your location on Android. If you are using a phone that is running on Android Oreo, for example Google Pixel or Nexus device, then you can easily disable apps’ location permission.

Of course, navigation apps like Google Maps requires location feature enabled, but there are several other apps that do not actually require your location for functioning. You can easily disable or enable location for each app in Android Oreo. The below guide explain the procedure in detail.

Note that, even if you disable location tracing some apps can still access your location by using location history stored on your phone. You should also remove location history from your phone for more privacy.

There are two ways to access the option to disable app location tracking in Android Oreo devices – via Apps & notification settings and Location settings menu. Both methods are given in detail below.

Disable Location Tracking via Apps & Notification Settings

1. Go to phone Settings and tap on Apps & notifications

2. Tap on App permissions.

3. Tap on Location. It will list all apps and services that requires your location

4. Select the apps from the list that you want to disable/enable location permission.

Disable Location Tracking via Location settings

1. Go to phone Settings and tap on Security & location.

2. Tap on Location under Privacy

3. Tap on App-level permissions

4. Select the apps from the list that you want to disable/enable location permission.

Note: You should also remove location history from your phone to prevent some apps accessing the location, even if you disable the GPS. Here is how it is.

1. Go to Settings > Security & location

2. Scroll down, and tap on Location.

3. Tap on Google location history under location services

4. Turn off location history toggle button

Note: You should also change location mode on your phone. To do so, go to Settings > Security & location > Location > Mode > and select any of the following one: High accuracy/Battery saving/Device only.
